The speed zone change will extend the 60km/h limit on the Echuca side of town – south of the Jones St intersection, for an additional 410m.
The move has been welcomed by Mathoura-based Murray River Councillor Tom Weyrich, who said he has raised safety concerns about that part of the highway in council chambers.
“As the town grows, there are a number of new houses going up.
“There are school children who need to cross the highway to get home, and there have been a few misses.
“The traffic just go too fast.”
Cr Weyrich said with further residential expansion currently being considered by council, the risk to families and children would have only increased as that growth eventuated.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson the speed limit was reviewed following a request from the community.
“Investigations found a poor past crash history, and in addition, a new speed zone will support the future residential development near Mathoura,” the spokesperson said.
“The reduction in speed zone will reduce the likelihood and impact of crashes and apply consistency to the speed zone lengths on sealed roads in residential areas.”
Announced on June 1, the new speed zone will come into effect on Friday, June 9, weather permitting.
Message boards have already been installed to advise of the pending change, and will remain in place for one week following the speed zone reduction.
Motorists are reminded to drive to the sign posted speed limit at all times.
