2023 isn’t just a good year to be a Sonic fan, it’s a fantastic year to be an Amy fan. She’s spent years on the sidelines, not being playable in a platformer since Sonic ’06 more than 15 years ago. However, her luck is turning around this year, as she’ll be playable in not one, but three Sonic games: Superstars, Frontiers, and Origins Plus.
Better yet, the latter game has another surprise for us. After years of waiting, Sonic Origins Plus is also finally giving Amy her own Super form, joining Super Sonic, Shadow, Knuckles and the rest of the gang who have long been able to harness the power of the Chaos Emeralds. Yes, she can do more than swing a hammer around now.
This seems to have come through gameplay footage that was released early, now taken down from YouTube. However, it was up long enough for Twitter user @UltimaShadowX to spot Super Amy, and celebrate how far our girl has come after years out of the spotlight.
While the original video can’t be viewed, it seems that she also has a Hyper form. Truly, Amy has just been holding back all of these years and could have defeated Eggman and Metal Sonic herself in Sonic CD if she felt like it.
Fans are hoping that this demonstration of her abilities means we’ll see her take a Super form in the 3D games too. This is a very real possibility, as not only will Sonic Origins Plus set the precedent that she is able to do this, but she’s becoming playable in Frontiers later this year. In Frontiers, Sonic has to take on a Super form to fight Titans. If Amy and the rest of the gang are able to take these bosses on too, then they would have to use the Chaos Emeralds as well.
Of course, we won’t know until the Frontiers update is released, and we don’t actually have a date for this right now. According to the roadmap, “playable characters and new story” is coming in “update three”, and we’ve only had the first update so far. The next one will likely be next month, as it’s meant to celebrate Sonic’s birthday. This will add new challenges and Koco, but could also add some surprises like the last update did.
In the meantime, Sonic Origins Plus and Sonic Superstars will have to give us our first taste of a playable Amy in years. Truly, a dream come true for eight-year-old me. And 24-year-old me as well, to be perfectly honest with you.
