ORANGE, Ohio
Identity theft: White Oak Trail
A resident, 78, reported June 6 that an unknown party opened a small business in his name in order to receive a federal Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL), without his knowledge or approval. After receiving a U.S. Small Business Administration “approval notice” in 2020, he said he immediately notified the agency of the scam.
But more recently, he received another letter from the SBA demanding payments of $49 a month on the fraudulent loan. He subsequently needed a police report to continue correcting the issue with the SBA.
Theft: Orange Place
Police were called to the Courtyard of Marriott at 10:20 a.m. June 10, where management explained that the previous night, a guest left his wallet on a bistro high table in the lobby.
When he retrieved it, the Pennsylvania man, 81, noticed that $202 cash and his Capital One credit card were missing. The manager reviewed security film and discovered that two other guests, a Cleveland man, 18, and woman, 25, had picked the wallet up, gone through it, placed money in their backpack, then handed the wallet back to the bartender.
The manager further noted that the suspects were now sitting outside in the courtyard, where police questioned them and the male suspect claimed he’d only taken $20, which he’d already spent on breakfast.
But the money in the suspect’s backpack included the same denominations described in detail by the victim, whose credit card had yet to be recovered. After reviewing the security footage, both were charged with misdemeanor theft.
Impaired driving, reckless operation, failure to control, divided highway violation, auto towed: I-271 North
A patrol officer in the northbound local freeway lanes at 2:40 a.m. June 9 reported a 2019 Kia Sorento suddenly crossed over from the express lanes over the bumpy grass median and into the local lanes.
This forced the officer to slow from 60 mph down to 25 mph to avoid a collision, at which point the Sorento went back off the left side of the roadway and continued along the grass median for another 100 yards before stopping.
Police said the driver, a Hartville woman, 57, showed signs of extreme impairment, such as taking 35 seconds to get the keys out of the ignition and longer to produce a driver’s license.
She was taken to the Solon jail, where she refused a Breathalyzer.
Driving under suspension, license forfeiture, improper display of license plates warrant served: I-271
A patrol officer running radar near the Harvard Road exit ramp on the freeway at 10:26 a.m. June 8 noticed a northbound Cadillac with no visible license plate, at least until he got within 6-10 feet to see through the tinted windows.
The driver, a Mayfield Heights man, 31, continued up to the Chagrin Boulevard exit, stopping in the Shell True North lot, explaining he did not have a license, knew the car was going to get towed and did not want to leave it on the roadside.
Police also found at least one misdemeanor warrant out of Kent, where officers agreed to take custody.
Warrant served: Lander Road
Bainbridge police notified Orange late on June 7 that they had in custody a Maple Heights man, 59, with a warrant from Orange indicating that he’d tested positive through toxicology lab results for “cocaine metabolites.” Custody was transferred and he was taken to the Solon jail.
General assistance, threats: Pike Drive
A resident, 38, came to the police station June 5 to report getting bizarre text messages several days earlier from his estranged wife’s boyfriend, a Shaker Heights man, 37, challenging him to a boxing match and adding he would “tie him up” if confronted. The resident only wanted documentation of those messages.
