Police have staged a daring rescue near a popular Queensland tourist spot after an elderly man was spotted clinging onto a sunken boat.
Officers were called to the inlet at Tin Can Bay near Gympie about 4pm on Friday after reports a small vessel had become submerged.
Upon arrival, the occupant – a 61-year-old man – was found in the water clinging to the vessel.
With assistance from a Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officer, police managed to pull the man safely on board the police boat.
Officers administered first aid before transporting the man to the Snapper Creek Boat Ramp.
He was treated for hypothermia and taken to Gympie Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigations into the incident are continuing.
Tin Can Bay is popular among tourists for being one of only two places in QLD where people can feed rare Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin.
