Geelong’s Under 15 Girls Hockey team has come away from the Victorian Country Junior Hockey Championships, held last weekend, with a silver medal.
On Saturday Geelong had accounted for Sunrasia 3-0, and drew with Ballarat and HCV (Bendigo). In Sunday’s semi-final Geelong drew with Glenelg, which was enough to get them through to the final on aggregate.
Unfortunately, Goulburn Valley, which beat Ballarat in the other semi, was too strong for Geelong on the day, winning 3-1 after a thrilling final match.
Zoe Sykes, from Kardinia, scored Geelong’s goal in the final, as well as two of the three goals against Sunrasia. Other goal-scorers for the team over the weekend were Chloe Laidlaw, Aimee Van Der Meer, Charlotte McGree and Sienna Clatworthy.
Geelong’s Under 18 boys and Under 13 boys also did well on the weekend, both bringing home bronze medals. “The U18 boys did not lose a match for the tournament and played for draws against both teams that played off in the Gold medal match, so it was a very close competition”, Geelong coordinator Gavin Van Der Meer said.
Geelong will have men’s and women’s teams in the upcoming Senior Country Championships, held over the King’s Birthday long weekend, 10-12 June.
