New education academy, SHARE, to enhance mental health training, research, and community outreach
NEW CANAAN, Conn., June 21, 2023–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Silver Hill Hospital, one of the nation’s premier psychiatric hospitals, is reinforcing its commitment to training, research, scholarship, and community collaboration with the formation of a new educational program, the Silver Hill Academy for Research and Education (SHARE). SHARE brings together under one umbrella a variety of educational programs regarding the latest and best treatments in the care of complex mental illness and addiction disorders, and it facilitates the ongoing professional development of clinicians and trainees across the world. In addition, SHARE focuses on the understanding and development of resilience for clinicians and first responders faced with increasing demands for services.
As part of this academy Silver Hill Hospital is also developing an Affiliate Faculty program of leading clinicians and educators around the nation.
The establishment of the academy comes amidst growing mental health concerns in America. More American adults currently have or are being treated for depression than ever before. Half of adults experience loneliness, and 16.5% of people ages 12 and older have a substance use disorder.
“We must come together as a professional community in order to meet the growing demands for psychiatric care,” said Jeff Katzman, M.D., Director of Education at Silver Hill Hospital. “SHARE draws on the collective knowledge of our Silver Hill Hospital faculty and our network of leading clinicians, scholars, and educators around the nation to deliver no/low-cost continuing education and to create a platform where clinicians can meet, collaborate, and support one another in addressing the mental health needs of their patients.”
SHARE encompasses a variety of in-person and virtual training and education programs designed for healthcare professionals worldwide, including practicing physicians, psychology interns and post-doctorate fellows, psychiatry residents, medical students, first responders, and more.
Programming is broken down into four branches:
-
Continuing education for clinicians: SHARE provides no/low cost continuing medical education (CME) to clinicians across the U.S. Virtual Ground Rounds draw hundreds of participants to learn from esteemed faculty on contemporary issues in mental health treatment. Additionally, Silver Hill Hospital has partnered with Project ECHO, a virtual learning community, on two unique programs to expose clinicians to the concepts of attachment, reflective functioning, and mentalization and to equip medical professionals and first responders with strategies to strengthen their own resilience as they provide critical care to others.
-
SHARE trainees: SHARE maintains several internship, residency, and fellowship opportunities for psychiatry, psychology, nursing, and social work trainees as well as rotating senior medical students. Trainees gain exposure and experience in the latest mental health treatments within a comprehensive hospital system where care is integrated across multiple settings.
-
Community outreach: SHARE offers resources and facilitates conversations among non-clinical audiences to combat the stigma around complex mental illness and addiction within the community.
-
Research and scholarship: SHARE encourages faculty and trainees to pursue academic interests and to advance knowledge within the field. This includes both formal research programs as well as ongoing writing groups to encourage scholarship for faculty and trainees.
Through its educational programs, Silver Hill Hospital has engaged with thousands of clinicians across 45 states and 18 countries within the last three years. SHARE is a formalization and extension of these programs into a defined academy of offerings and collaborations.
“Silver Hill Hospital was founded on the principle of helping others, and we are as committed to that mission today as we were more than 90 years ago,” said Andrew J. Gerber, M.D., Ph.D., President and Medical Director of Silver Hill Hospital. “We believe deeply in our responsibility to spread the knowledge, experiences, successes, and relationships we have cultivated. By investing in continuing education and promoting an ecosystem that fuels constant information sharing between clinicians, we can improve access to treatment for patients, build a resilient mental health workforce, and cultivate a pipeline of well-trained clinicians who can meet the growing demand for mental health care.”
SHARE will celebrate the graduation of a class of doctoral-level trainees in the upcoming months. Three of these graduates will move into full-time psychology and psychiatry positions at Silver Hill Hospital, putting the knowledge they gained within the SHARE program into direct practice.
“SHARE has provided a transformative experience full of well-rounded opportunities to expand my knowledge base,” said Michael Huff, M.D., a SHARE fellowship trainee. “The mentorship from the seasoned professionals at Silver Hill Hospital has been second to none, exposing me to countless real-world scenarios that will undoubtedly shape my career for the better.”
