Airspace operating procedures around Sydney and Canberra will be changed for 22–25 May as the cities host an event.
These air security arrangements will put in place significant restrictions within 30 nm of Sydney and Canberra airports and flight notification requirements out to 120 nm from each location.
Scheduled passenger and cargo flights to and from both airports will continue to operate with the restricted airspace but may experience delays at times.
General aviation, drones and aircraft below 5,700 kg maximum take-off weight will not be permitted to operate in some areas during this time.
Some general aviation operations will be permitted in the outer restricted area which extends to 30 nautical miles, but restrictions will continue to apply to many activities.
The restrictions are likely to be activated at short notice via NOTAM.
Other airspace restrictions will also be in place through Air Defence Identification Zones (ADIZ). General aviation aircraft can operate in these areas but must have a flight plan filed with the pilot’s contact details. You should not deviate from this flight plan before you have informed air traffic control of your intent.
The ADIZ will extend out to 120 nm from each city at various heights and will be patrolled by Defence and police aircraft.
General aviation aircraft operating within the Bankstown control zone will not be affected if staying within the circuit area.
Pilots flying within 120 nm of Sydney or Canberra during this period are required to read the AIP SUP carefully and monitor NOTAMs.
Read the AIP SUP on the Airservices website.
Drones
Drone flying will also be restricted at Sydney and Canberra during the event.
Drone owners are urged to check one of the CASA-verified drone safety apps if planning to fly a drone within 28 km of Sydney and 21 km of Canberra during this time.
The airspace restrictions:
- will be active on certain days and at certain times
- apply to drones of all sizes and weights, including drones that might be considered small toys
- can be identified through the CASA-verified drone safety apps and website.
It is your responsibility to ensure you do not fly in areas where restrictions are in place – heavy penalties may apply if you operate illegally.
