The metal object was later determined to be a small calibre bullet, NSW Police said.
Police confirmed the classroom was full of Year 1 and Year 2 students at the time of the shooting.
Detective Superintendent Grant Healey described the shooting as “careless and reckless”.
“Our early investigations indicate it wasn’t a targeted attack,” he told reporters.
“We also know that the shot came from some distance away.”
There were no known injuries to any students or staff at the school.
The school was not placed into lockdown at the time, but all students were removed from the classroom.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the incident has commenced.
The bullet was seized and will be forensically examined.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers.
