Melbourne Social Co is a socially led creative agency specialising in premium content creation and social media management services.
Based in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, the independent agency – founded in 2011 – offers its clients a full-service approach to social media management with brands.
Shelley Friesen, director of Melbourne Social Co, spoke to Mediaweek about its recent wins, the agency’s key points of difference, and how a successful 2022 has led to their “biggest year yet.”
Friesen on leading Melbourne Social Co
The agency, founded in 2011, offers a range of services to clients, including strategy, content creation, channel management, influencer outreach and paid social media ads management.
Friesen said: “While our service offering has evolved over the years, we’ve always had a strong focus on social media strategy and premium content creation.”
As the director, Friesen shared that while she oversees the overall running of the business, the creative side is an area she likes to play a part in.
“As a creative at heart, I also have a strong focus on the creative direction of the agency and its output,” she said.
Maintaining and expanding the Melbourne Social Co client portfolio
Melbourne Social Co’s client portfolio has grown from its core clients in its first year, many of whom they continue to consult for, and which Friesen noted: “is a great testament to the level of service we provide as a business.”
The agency has also expanded its client portfolio recently, welcoming Playside Studios, Intrapac Property and Melbourne Marriott, among other names.
In April, the agency was appointed as the social media agency of DoorDash for Australia and New Zealand after a competitive pitching process.

How being social media focused sets Melbourne Social Co apart
Friesen noted that Melbourne Social Co has several unique selling propositions that set them apart.
“We are one of Australia’s oldest and most successful social media-focused agencies. The work we produce is of an incredibly high standard, and we pride ourselves on leading the way in our industry,” she said.
Friesen noted that as an agency, Melbourne Social Co prides itself on having a finger on the pulse and sharing that information with its clients.
“We share a weekly social media trends report with our clients, suggest content to action just as a trend is emerging, and have the ability to turn trending content around within 24 hours – while it’s still relevant,” she said.
Friesen also highlighted that the agency is “nimble enough” to work dynamically and reactively.
“As we’re not bogged down with procedures and red tape. But at the same time, we’re large enough to be well-versed in strategy and know what works for different business types and industries.
“It’s the perfect sweet spot – in my opinion!” she added.
A look back at 2022 and how it’s shaping the year ahead
Reflecting on the last year, Friesen noted that it was a “big year” for Melbourne Social Co. “We ticked off a number of milestones, including a rebrand and the launch of a new website,” she said.
“Coupled with this was a number of marquee client signings and a move to a new Collins Street studio. It was a busy year!” she added.
Looking toward the year ahead, Friesen forecasted it would be the agency’s “biggest year yet.”
“We are about to welcome some new talent to our team, and we’re excited to be expanding our TikTok service offering this year, working closely with the team at TikTok to deliver really fun campaigns for our clients,” Friesen excitedly hinted.
