Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Kingston and the surrounding areas, including Odessa, Frontenac Islands, Napanee, Consecon, Picton, Sandbanks Park, Stirling, Tweed, Madoc, Tamworth, Sydenham, South Frontenac, Central Frontenac, and Lanark County. The national weather agency warns that conditions are favorable for developing severe thunderstorms in the afternoon of Friday, June 2, 2023, and into the evening.
According to the weather statement, the thunderstorms in the forecast may produce strong wind gusts and heavy rain, which could cause localized heavy rainfall if they remain in one area. Aside from strong wind gusts and small hail, thunderstorms can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads, which may be hazardous to vehicles.
Environment Canada urges people to take proper precautions as lightning poses a threat to people’s safety. Lightning causes fatalities and injuries to Canadians every year. The agency advises people to take cover immediately if they hear thunder roaring.
The thunderstorms may carry on for several hours until they lose intensity or develop into severe thunderstorms. In such a case, further warnings will be issued for the affected areas.
Whether one is driving or staying indoors, being aware of the weather conditions is crucial. The weather statement issued by Environment Canada is a reminder that taking precautions and preparing for inclement weather can help mitigate situations that may be harmful.
