A Barwon Heads ruckman turned forward has put a former Gold Coast Sun in the shade, slotting seven straight goals in one of the Seagulls’ best wins of the BFL season.
Geelong Amateur wins on the siren after a 50m penalty against Anglesea in BFL
Anglesea, which had won its past four games at an average of 46 points, could not contain the reigning premier’s armoury of goalkickers with 10 players slotting majors at Howard Harmer Oval.
Seagulls co-coach Sam Schaller said Close got the better of former rookie-listed Sun and two-time GFL premiership player Josh Jaska, pulling down some strong grabs in the round 9 fixture on Saturday, after kicking five the previous round against Queenscliff.
Playing coach Mitch Herbison also slotted four, as Barwon Heads’s total of 21.8 (134) was its eighth 100-plus score from nine starts.
The defending champions have only dropped one game for the year, a 52-point loss to unbeaten ladder leaders Torquay in round 5.
While Dylan Pettingill recorded six majors and Liam Holland four for the Roos, they didn’t quite have the back up support enjoyed by the home team.
Schaller was extremely pleased to dispatch a top four team by such a healthy margin.
“They’ve been in some pretty good form,” Schaller said of Anglesea.
“One of our biggest assets, if those boys (Close and Herbison) aren’t kicking goals they’re at least creating a contest and bringing other guys into the game.
“It’s a work in progress for us, so other oppositions can’t pinpoint those two guys, we’ve got to have plenty of options.”
It caps off a fine start to the season for the Seagulls, with three sizeable wins in succession and essentially injury-free since the opening rounds.
Schaller said it was an enjoyable game to watch with a wealth of scoring shots from both sides.
“It felt like whenever a ball went inside 50 a goal was being kicked,” he said.
“It was a funny game from that regard.
“(Close) had his kicking boots on which was nice.”
Barwon Heads next play Geelong Amateur while Anglesea faces Queenscliff.
