Heralded as the ‘Oscars of Science’, the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes celebrate excellence in the fields of scientific research and engagement. In honour of these outstanding achievements, the Australian Museum, Sydney, is hosting the Eureka Talks Series.
You’re invited to conversations with the winners, finalists and other science leaders at the Australian Museum on the second Saturday of every month, as they cover off developments, challenges and innovations in their specialist fields of climate, health and science communication.
This fascinating monthly series will expand your knowledge and spark your curiosity.
Waste Not, Want Not
Saturday 10 June: 3pm–4pm
- In the first Eureka Talk, join Dr Jackson Ryan, winner of the 2022 Australian Museum Eureka Prize for Science Journalism, and the 2022 New South Wales Australian of the Year and two-time Australian Museum Eureka Prize winner, Professor Veena Sahajwalla, as they discuss the cutting-edge research revolutionising waste. Zoonotic Diseases – The Next Pandemic?
Saturday 8 July: 3pm–4pm
- Explore the science behind the deadliest event of the 21st century. Australian Museum Eureka Prize-winning journalist, Olivia Willis, sits down with world-leading evolutionary biologist and virologist, Professor Eddie Holmes, and the Australian Museum’s Chief Scientist and Director of the Australian Museum Research Institute, Professor Kris Helgen, to discuss what is being done to prevent future zoonotic outbreaks. Science in the Age of Fake News
Saturday 12 August: 3pm–4pm
- In the third Eureka Talk, dive into a thought-provoking discussion on the challenges of science communication in the age of fake news. Hosted by Australian Museum Eureka Prize founder, Robyn Williams AO, this panel discussion will explore how science and fiction can be separated and whether science is being weaponised. Panellists include Australian Museum Eureka Prize finalist and Chief Scientist of the University of New South Wales’ AI Institute, Professor Toby Walsh, and Australian Museum Eureka Prize winning journalist, Dyani Lewis.
