Communities across Livingston County will observe Memorial Day on Monday with parades and special events.
Here’s a quick look at some of the commemorations:
n AVON: All veterans are invited to march in the Avon Memorial Day Parade. Assemble at the Avon Senior High School Parking lot at 10 a.m. to march down Clinton Street to Genesee Street and to the circle monument for the observance of Memorial Day. Contact Kurt at 585-519-3907
n Caledonia: Specific details on this year’s observance were not immediately available. Traditionally, the parade has started at 10 a.m. from Caledonia High School, 99 North St., and march to Matthew Cleary American Legion Post 255 at 3155 Church St. where a ceremony follows.
n Conesus. Memorial Day begins at 10 a.m. with services at the flag and monument across from the Conesus Town Hall, 6210 South Livonia Rd. The parade starts about 11 a.m. There will be a very short ceremony at the cemetery on Elm Street then the Auxiliary is having a picnic at the Post, 6317 Marshall Rd., at noon. The Sons of American Legion is having its Memorial Day bash with live music, food and beverages.
n Geneseo: Members of the Geneseo Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts invite all veterans to march in the parade, which begins at 10 a.m. Veterans should muster at the Village Park, Main and Park streets, at 9:30 a.m. The parade will march along Main Street to the Civil War Memorial for a wreath-laying ceremony, then return along Main Street for a ceremony in the Village Park.
n Lakeville: The Lakeville Memorial Day parade is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. May 29. Members of the Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department and American Legion Harrison-Lee Post 283 invite the community to participate in honoring veterans. The Livonia Central School Band will participate. Parade moves from the Lakeville United Church of Christ, 5687 Big Tree Rd., eastward on Route 20A onto the Lakeville Volunteer Fire Hall Grounds, 5939 Stone Hill Rd. Reception follows at the fire hall.
n Lima: The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. Participants will lineup beginning at 8:45 a.m. at Lima School on College Street. A community luncheon will follow at the American Legion, 2475 state Route 65, West Bloomfield, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. No take-outs available.
n Livonia: Memorial Day parade starts at 10 a.m. in Livonia. Members of American Legion Harrison-Lee Post 283 invites the community to participate and honor veterans. Parade forms in front of the Intermediate School at 9:45 a.m. At 10 a.m., the parade moves north on to Commercial Street then to the Livonia Public Library at Washington and Main streets for a short ceremony. The Livonia Central School Band will participate. Groups interested in marching in the parade, should call the Post at 585-346-9663.
Also, in Livonia, a short ceremony is planned for 11 a.m. at Hurlbut Conesus Lake Nursing Home, 6131 Big Tree Rd. (Route 20A). The Nursing Home, the Livonia and Lakeville Volunteer Fire Departments, and American Legion Harrison-Lee Post 283 invite the community to participate, to honor our veteran residents at the nursing home and to meet other residents. The Livonia Central School Band will participate.
n Leicester: A Memorial Day parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the village. The parade route will go from Leicester Cemetery to the monument in the Village Park between Main Street and South Parkway. The parade and ceremony are presented by Carlton Borse American Legion Post 1007 in Leicester.
n Mount Morris: Memorial Day observances begin with prayer ceremonies at 9 a.m. at Old Chapel Street Cemetery, New chapel Hill and Murray Street Catholic Cemetery. Parade participants will lineup on Trumbull Street at 10 a.m., with the parade to commence at 10:30 a.m. At 11 a.m., a ceremony is scheduled for Veterans Memorial Park with guest speaker Brigade Command Sgt. Major Joshua Bacon. Immediately following the ceremony, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, 3 Elm St., will provide free hot dogs and refreshments in the large building, and a special lunch for all veterans and their immediate families in the small building.
n Springwater: Members of Kern Robinson American Legion Post 905, 7998 School St., Springwater, will present a series of ceremonies beginning at 7:45 a.m. May 29 at Capron/East Avenue Cemetery on East Avenue. The is the Post’s 68th annual Memorial Day commemoration. The public is encouraged to atted. Other cemetery honors include: Covered Bridge, also known as Evergreen Cemetery on Canadice Road, 8:05 a.m.; Ford/Christian Church Cemetery on Canadice Road, 8:20 a.m.; Green Gull Cemetery on Canadice road, behind Mastin Property, 8:35 a.m.; 9 a.m., Pleasant Valley East, also known as Fairview Cemetery, on Tabors Corners Road, 9 a.m.; Ashley Cemetery on Ashley Road, 10 a.m.; Carney Hollow, also known as Pleasant Valley West Cemetery, on Moose Road, 10:20 a.m.; Erwin, also known as Fountain Cemetery, on Carney Hollow Road, Webster Crossing, 10:45 a.m.; Mount Vernon/Evergreen Cemetery on Kellogg Road, 11 a.m..
A parade forms up at 11:30 a.m. at Larry Canute Memorial Park behind the American Legion Post on School Street. American Legion Riders Post 905 invites all veteran motorcyclists to ride in the parade.
A ceremony begins at 12:30 p.m. at the Post. The ceremony includes the reading of the names of local veterans buried outside of Springwater.
At 1 p.m., the Post hosts a chicken barbecue fundraiser for the Post 905 building fund.
n Wayland: The Wayland American Legion Honor Guard will be host Memorial Day ceremonies beginning at 7:30 a.m. The schedule includes East Wayland Cemetery, 7:30 a.m.; North Loon Lake Cemetery, 7:45 a.m.; Lake Side Cemetery, 8 a.m.; Old Catholic Cemetery, 8:45 a.m.; New Catholic Cemetery, 8:55 a.m.; St. Peter’s Cemetery, 9:50 a.m.; Sacred Heart Cemetery, 10 a.m.; and Wayland Cemetery, 11 a.m.
