A St Mary’s focal point slotted six as the Saints boasted 10 individual goalkickers in a 77-point smashing of the winless St Albans.
Leopold win after the siren in GFL preliminary final against Newtown & Chilwell.
The Saints were happy to bank the win and emerge unscathed on Saturday as they turn their attention to a top-of-the-table clash with Newtown & Chilwell after next weekend’s bye.
The reigning premier boosted its percentage to stay ahead of rival St Joseph’s and in second spot on the GFL ladder but Robertson said some “sloppy” disposal meant the win over St Albans wasn’t one to write home about.
“The game ebbed and flowed a little in terms of who had control,” he said.
“It was one we had to get done
“When we look back it won’t be the highlight of our season.
“We got through it with no injuries so that was probably the most pleasing part of it.”
Key forward Patrick Dowling (six goals), midfielder Matthew Keast (four) and Charlie Sprague (three) did the bulk of the damage on the scoreboard as the home side boasted 10 individual goal kickers.
Dowling’s haul took him to equal fourth place on the goal kicking table, with one major to Sam Dobson shoring up top spot.
It was easily the Saints’ biggest score for the season and largest win after six rounds of GFL, and could have possibly been more with the home team kicking 6.9 in the final term.
For the Supersaints, Michael Murdoch and Dylan White kicked two apiece but the team struggled with accuracy, kicking 2.11 points across the first and final terms.
However, a 6.4 second quarter set up the win for St Mary’s as they took a 49-point lead at the main break, eventually running out winners 21.18 (144) to 7.15 (57) at Anthony Costa Oval.
Robertson was happy to get through the match without injury but said the match could have been closer if not for inaccuracy from the opposition.
“Had St Albans kicked a bit straighter then it might have been a bit different,” Robertson said.
“There were quite a few shots that were pretty gettable.
“I think they’d be disappointed with some of the execution they had, they competed pretty well.
“They dominated the first seven minutes (of the final term) then we ended up having 14 shots on goal in the last 25 minutes or so.”
