Kane Cornes has urged Carlton to stay with Michael Voss, stating the Blues won’t be benefitted from sacking yet another coach mid-season.
Voss’ side is in the midst of a form slump that only got worse on Sunday night, with Carlton on the receiving end of a 34-point loss to Essendon on Sunday.
The numbers make for dire reading.
It’s been almost a month and a half since the Blues recorded their last win and have lost eight of their last nine games.
Not once in the last five games has Carlton kicked more than seven goals in a game, despite lining up with two Coleman Medallists.
Yet with the tide turning against the Blues coach, Voss has found an ally in Cornes.
“I’m not one to be calling for coach’s heads now – in fact I think that would be a panic move – but it looked like a coach-killing performance,” he told SEN Breakfast.
“Sacking the coach right now is not the answer. I think that’s the last thing Carlton needs, to sack another coach… you’re not going to gain anything from sacking the coach now. The season is done.
“At half-time, they had the whole game in control but they butcher the ball going inside 50.
“Yes, some of that is method. Clearly, they tried to play a bit more attacking last night, some times t worked, most of the time it didn’t.
“But their key players, their players that are paid big money to perform, are not doing that.”
It comes as Carlton CEO Brian Cook on Sunday night guaranteed Voss would see out his contract and coach on in 2024.
“He will be with us until at least the end of next year,” Cook declared to ABC Grandstand.
Speaking post-game, Voss stated he still feels the support of the entire club despite its miserly run under his watch.
The Blues meet Gold Coast next Sunday before their Round 15 bye and will finish Round 13 in the bottom four for the first time this year.
