15:50 Curragh: Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas (5 furlongs) Meditate was sent off as second-favourite for the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas three weeks ago, but she didn’t handle the soft ground anywhere near as well as both Mawj and Tahiyra, eventually finishing sixth of the 20 runners.
Back on quickening ground, Meditate could easily turn that form around with Tahiyra, who has yet to be tested in these conditions. She won her maiden over the minimum trip on this track, following it up with three successive wins over six and seven furlongs, all of which came on decent ground.
She finally relinquished her unbeaten career record in heavy going here behind Tahiyra in the Moyglare Stud Stakes in September, when she was sent off as a very short-priced favourite, but the soft conditions favoured Tahiyra as they did in the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas. At the end of last season, Meditate went over to Keeneland where she proved that she is a top-class filly under the right conditions by winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf by a clear 2.5 lengths from 13 rivals on firm ground.
Clearly, the quicker the ground the better for her, with the reverse perhaps being true of Tahiyra. Time will tell if that is to be confirmed, but as things stand, the value has to be with Meditate.
Suggested bet: Meditate in the 15:50 at the Curragh
Of the others, one of the other Aidan O’Brien runners, Jackie Oh, comes here on the back of a narrow defeat in a 10-furlong Listed event on heavy going at Navan last month.
This will be her first run on decent ground but she is really well-bred and she is a full sister to four high-class performers on decent ground, so there is every chance that she will improve again for it. She is the most lightly-raced filly in the field and, as such, she has more scope for improvement than her rivals at this stage of her career, and hailing from a yard that has sent out the winners of three of the last five renewals of this contest (and runners-up in the other two), she could very well run much better than her early prices suggest.
