Dignitaries, police and fire, local sponsors make this year’s gathering extra special
On lands once occupied by the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, on a beautiful property in Burlington’s Rural Ward 6 with stunning views of the Niagara Escarpment, neighbourhood families gathered for their fifth annual Summer Social on June 11.
Despite the threat of rain (which thankfully held off), property owner Dianne Zomer welcomed more than 50 rural neighbours who came together to greet each other and help celebrate Burlington’s 150+ Anniversary.
Mayor Marianne Meed Ward, Ward 6 Councillor Angelo Bentivegna and representatives of the Burlington Fire and Halton Police departments (along with their fire truck and police cruiser), and several other local representatives and sponsors joined in the event.
One highlight of the festivities was a quiz on the colourful 150+ year history of rural Ward 6. Larry Campbell, local historian and sixth-generation pioneer
landowner, provided circa 1850s maps and photos of the area for the quiz.
Many local sponsors and businesses donated generous prizes: Backed By Bees, Bateman MacKay, City of Burlington, Enviro Mushrooms, Escarpment Pet Retreat, Fortinos, Halton Region, Hutchinson Farm, Jacob’s Gardenscape, Mount Nemo Golf Club, Karen Paul & Associates, Standard Broadband, The Ranch, and the Zomer Family. Food and cash donations were collected for Food for Life.
Volunteer organizers Margaret Doma, Sheilagh Borcsok, Vincent Sowa, Jennifer Lickver and Wilma Jacobs look forward to planning this event twice a year as a way to bring this wonderful rural community together.
Margaret Doma said, “We try to move the sites for this event around each time, to involve as many of our rural neighbours as possible. This year’s 150+ made our
event even more special.”
