Family Day at the Broome Turf Club last Sunday was not only a great success for mums, dads and kids, but it also produced a great day’s racing.
Jockey Simone Altieri scored a winning treble while quicksilver gelding Rogues Point bolted home for his third consecutive victory.
Four-year-old Here No Cash won its Maiden race as an odds-on favourite to open the program.
Frontrunners proved to be the winners over most of the day, with Silkinize winning again in race two.
Simone Altieri started her winning run with a victory in race three aboard So Sway.
On the pace all the way, the six-year-old won convincingly by almost a length.
This was also the first leg of a winning double for trainer Anthony Barton.
Well-travelled hoop Austin Galati had a few anxious moments as he steered Uno Me to victory in the fourth.
Race five saw Alice Springs jockey Phillip Crich ride Final Plan to another all-the-way win.
Rogues Point had won its previous two Broome starts effortlessly, but its next Broome start was over 1600m.
As a three-year-old, trained by Anthony Freedman, it had come very close to winning the Tasmanian Derby over 2400m.
After racing in Victoria and South Australia, it came west, and was stabled with Justin Warwick. Later, Mark Bairstow took up the reins. Neither trainer had success.
And so to Anthony Barton, who with partner Altieri, acquired the gelding and started it in Mt Barker in January of this year.
A win in Perth in February has brought the grey to Broome, and he will no doubt become a crowd favourite.
Ms Altieri gained her third win of the day when odds on favourite, Wuhan Warrior led all the way to win the last, for trainer Aaron Pateman.
And there should be more great racing on Saturday for the fourth meeting of the season.
