KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — Three multi-sport athletes were named recipients of major senior awards at the recent Kensington Intermediate-Senior High School Awards Celebrations.
Grade 11 students Rodney Robinson and Abby Peters were announced as the athletes of the year for the 2022-23 P.E.I. School Athletic Association (PEISAA) season.
Senior Amelia Murphy was introduced as the recipient of the John Bowness Achievement Award.
Abby Peters
Peters was involved in many sports at KISH this season.
She was the leading scorer on both the senior girls’ soccer and basketball teams and earned all-star recognition for both sports. Peters advanced to the badminton provincials in both singles and doubles and also excelled in track and field.
“This athlete is extremely dedicated to every sport she plays,” said KISH athletic director Katherine McCarthy. “She understands that to achieve personal and team goals, you need to be there regardless of how you are feeling or how busy your life outside of sports may be.
“She is a fierce competitor and has developed into a player that not only wants to win but is willing to do whatever it takes to win.”
McCarthy went on to praise Peters’ respect for her coaches, teammates and opponents.
“Her ability to take coaching and implement what is being taught has allowed her to grow so much this past season in everything she played,” said McCarthy. “She always has a smile and a positive attitude that makes others want to be around her on and off the field.
“This attitude, hard work and competitive fire allows her to be a leader, on and off the playing field.”
Rodney Robinson
Faro Halupa, a member of KISH’s athletic department, said Robinson played an important role in every team he was involved with.
“He brought a positive attitude to each practice and every game he played in,” said Halupa. “He is the kind of player that is going to lead through his actions. He’s what they call in hockey, put the hard hat on and show up to work type of guy.”
Robinson’s impressive resumé includes playing with seven KISH teams during the 2022-23 season, including soccer, cross-country, basketball, hockey, badminton, rugby and track and field. Halupa noted Robinson and these teams won multiple provincial medals.
“There were times this year he was playing two sports at the same time,” said Halupa. “This never stopped him from attending every practice and game.
“His dedication to the KISH sports program would be hard to exceed.”
Halupa describes Robinson as a coachable player who always accepts feedback and wants to learn from mistakes.
“He loves sports, which is obvious when you see him laughing and smiling on whatever playing surface he is on,” said Halupa. “This is one of many things that he brings to a team that helps create a winning atmosphere.”
Amelia Murphy
Halupa said Murphy possess all the criteria for the John Bowness Achievement Award, presented to a senior high school student who shows dedication, determination and enthusiasm for sports.
These were qualities that Bowness worked to instill in all his athletes during a 30-plus-year career as a teacher and athletic director at KISH.
“She knows what it is like to compete at the highest level, under pressure and to raise her game and succeed,” said Halupa. “John would have been thrilled to coach this young woman through her time here as I was, and she will be missed by all those who did over the last six years.”
Halupa described Murphy as a determined athlete who always wants to get better and contribute to a winning team and culture every day, regardless of what sport she is playing.
Murphy wore the KISH colours in volleyball, badminton and rugby in her Grade 12 year. Halupa went on to describe Murphy as a leader.
“Being a leader is not something that everyone can or wants to do,” said Halupa. “It’s hard, however, this athlete always seemed to be at the forefront of all their teams when leadership was needed; whether that was supplying some words of encouragement, a little tough love or by leading by example.”
