A major Sydney road has been closed to peak hour traffic after a driver died following a frightening police pursuit in Sydney’s south.
The chase began after Highway Patrol attempted to stop a utility vehicle on Alfords Point Rd in Menai shortly after 6am Friday.
NSW Police said the driver allegedly failed to stop and a pursuit was initiated by police.
A short time later, the ute collided with another car before coming to a stop.
The driver of the ute, who has not been formally identified, died at the scene.
The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
Specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit were brought in on Friday to examine the crime scene.
Alfords Point Rd, which connects Lucas Heights to Padstow, is closed in both directions with diversions in place.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area and make alternative travel arrangements.
Live Traffic NSW urged drivers to instead use the Bangor Bypass or Heathcote Rd.
“Motorists travelling from Sutherland can consider using Princes Hwy to travel north,” according to the website.
An investigation has commenced into the incident by a Critical Incident Investigation Team from Sydney City Police Area Command.
The Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC) has been notified of the critical incident and the investigation will come under review by the Professional Standards Command.
