Tugs assist dry bulk ships out of ports with safe towage (source: ICS)

Throughout TUGTECHNOLOGY ’23, tug owners, industry associations, classification societies and naval architects will highlight challenges and present valuable solutions for improving onboard safety
During this two-day conference in Rotterdam, the Netherlands on 22-23 May, Smit Lamnalco director for LNG business and project development Andrew Brown will outline the safety challenges associated with using alternative fuels and the new training requirements on board tugs.
He will look at scenarios for bunkering fuels including methanol, LNG and hydrogen, and the consequence for crew training.
In a live interview, Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore chief executive for the Nordic region, Gijsbert De Jong and vice president for northern Europe Herman Spilker will shine the spotlight on regulations impacting tug owners and towage.
They will provide insight into the regulatory landscape, including the advantages and challenges of new technology adoption and review the key technical limitations and standards required.
Robert Allan Ltd ship simulation specialist Mike Shives will examine standards for tug performance and consider the importance of simulators in modelling towage requirements and tugboat operations.
In another session of technical presentations, British Tugowners Association (BTA) chairman and Svitzer Europe head of marine standards Scott Baker will team up with BTA secretary and UK Chamber of Shipping manager of safety and nautical policies Robert Merrylees to examine person overboard incidents and the latest equipment for retrieving them from danger.
The Workboat Association chief executive Kerrie Forster will consider how tug owners can meet tug master training requirements by putting a new training regime in place to enable new skillsets and operations.
Kotug International general manager for the Maritime Excellence Center, Patrick Everts, will present the latest training for adopting new fuels and tug concepts.
In his presentation, he will demonstrate how training is an important component for reducing energy consumption and emissions from daily operations.
Taking a different subject, EuroRope Marine sales director Christian Nielsen Sandøy and Hampidjan Advant sales manager for tugs and mooring Feike-Jan Bergstra will consider the causes of towline failure and present how to reduce the risk of these causing dangerous incidents and seafarer injuries.
