About the opportunity
The Indigenous Australians’ Health Programme Workforce and Maternity Services Project aims to build the capacity of regional and remote Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS) for Birthing on Country Initiatives and augmented smoking cessation care. Southern Cross University will deliver the Project in partnership with three ACCHS in regional remote areas. The project vision is to strengthen Birthing on Country (BOC) strategies and combine these with maternal smoking cessation initiatives.
The Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow will play a key role in the delivery of innovative research for the iSISTAQUIT Birthing on Country and allied projects. As an academic at this level, it is expected that you will undertake relevant engagement and service activities in support of the project. Your core responsibilities will include:
- Lead and conduct high-level research in support of the project preparing research publications and progress reports, and participation in regular meetings.
- Prepare research publications and progress reports and participate in regular meetings to discuss project objectives, methodology and outcomes.
- Undertake relevant community and professional engagement that supports and enhances the Project priorities.
- Advance external links by collaborating on external activities and sustaining relationships with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.
- Work effectively across multi-disciplinary teams and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
About you
As the successful candidate you will have a relevant PHD qualification within related fields of science e.g., behavioural science, public health, epidemiology, community health, Indigenous health, nursing, social science, psychology, medicine and demonstrated success in the management of research projects, clinical trials or community-based projects with a focus on health. More specifically, you will have:
- Proven success as a chief investigator in applications for external research funding.
- Track record of supervising hours and postgraduate student research.
- Experience in the collection, analysis, and reporting on qualitative and quantitative data from health services, clinical or field trials.
- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work as a collaborative team member.
- Demonstrated experience working in Indigenous settings or in Indigenous health research or cross-cultural projects will be viewed favourably.

This is a full-time, fixed-term (2 years) position, part-time appointments of 80% will be considered.
Located at Coffs Harbour. Generous relocation support is available. Lismore or Gold Coast campus preferences will be considered.
The level of appointment will be made at Research Fellow (Level B) or Senior Research Fellow (Level C) commensurate with the qualifications, skills and experience of the successful candidate.
The base salary for Academic Level B ranges from $101,544 – $120,179 per annum, plus 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation. The total remuneration package is up to $140,609.
The base salary for Academic Level C ranges from $123,900 – $142,531 per annum, plus 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation. The total remuneration package is up to $166,761.
