Nineteen athletes at Reed High are headed to the college level after taking part in a signing-day ceremony Wednesday on campus. We caught up with the Raiders athletes headed to Division I colleges, which include football player Spencer Firebaugh, who will walk on at Nevada; softball player Karolyn Glover, who is headed to Louisiana Tech; and gymnast Mackenzie Kelly, who will attend Southern Utah.
Said Firebaugh: “I played for the Wolf Pack when I was a little kid. It’s always been my dream. I went to all these games. I was, like, ‘I want to play at Mackay.’ When the opportunity came, I was, like, ‘I’m staying home.’ It’s awesome to see them giving local kids more attention because before it used to be all these out-of-state kids and we’d just go and watch these kids. Now that we get to play where we grew up, it’s going to be impactful for us and set the wave for the next generation coming up.”
Said Glover: “I’m just for thankful for the people who have helped me get there. I couldn’t have done it without my parents or my coaches or my family friends, so I owe it to them. I love them like parents down there (at Louisiana Tech), so I’m just very excited to have that kind of support system and obviously to play softball. That doesn’t suck, either.”
Said Kelly: “I’m really excited, and it feels good because I’ve always wanted to do college gymnastics, and it’s kind of a stress reliever that I have somewhere to go because you can only do gymnastics for so long. I’m really excited to continue the next four years at a school where the environment is different.”
