EVENTS will be held throughout Mount Gambier/Berrin as Reconciliation Week 2023 begins.
Reconciliation Week this year gravitates around the theme “Be a Voice for Generations” while encouraging Australians to be a voice for reconciliation in people’s everyday lives.
It encourages people to act for a more just, equitable and reconciled country for all.
Events will be held from Wednesday to Friday for the week, including Pangula Mannamurna Aboriginal Corporation and the Limestone Coast Local Health Network celebrating the healing circles with an afternoon tea.
Pangula chief executive officer Phoenix James said the event will be a partnership event between Pangula and the health network which will focus on bringing Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities together.
“This will allow them to have strong voices around reconciliation and what it means to us in our region in regards to coming together and moving forward,” Mr James said.
“Having an event with the health network allows us to invite Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people to come and have a tour of Pangula and see our healing circles with First Nations elder Uncle Doug Nicholls.”
“It is a good opportunity for us to come together and talk about the healing circles and what it means for the community and us in our reconciliation journey.”
He said it was also about bringing communities together and taking ideas about moving forward.
Other events include the Nunga Screen at the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre on Wednesday at 11am and 7pm.
There will be a Mabo Day breakfast held at the Mount Gambier City Hall on Thursday from 10am until 12pm with Children and Family Health Services hosting an afternoon tea at 2pm.
On Friday, UniSA will host a gathering at its new Yarning Circle from 11am until 2pm with Grant High School also hosting an event at 3.30pm until 5.30pm.
