With the market leaders looking vulnerable at their current odds, some of the others appear overpriced, not least Ramon Di Loria, who goes well on this track and who is still unexposed over five furlongs on turf.
This five-year-old had never raced over the minimum trip until August last year, when he took the eye finishing a never-nearer third of 10 on the uphill track at Carlisle, despite the good-to-firm ground being much faster than he prefers. He travelled very comfortably behind the pace on that first try over the distance and, had the ground been slower, he would have gone closer. His only subsequent five-furlong run on turf was in a Class 3 handicap on the flat track at Musselburgh two weeks ago, a race in which several of today’s field took part.
His chance was greatly compromised by having the widest draw of all and he also met trouble when trying to mount a challenge, so it is very easy to overlook that performance.
Suggested bet: Ramon Di Loria to win the 17:45 at Hamilton
He will have a far better chance on this uphill track where he has gone very well on his last two visits, both of which were over six furlongs last summer when he finished an encouraging third on both occasions.
An uphill five furlongs on good or good-soft ground looks ideal for him, especially if the pace is strong (given that he stays further), which looks likely to be the case today.
Of the others, Monsieur Kodi caught the eye when finishing a never-nearer fourth of 15 in the aforementioned five-furlong handicap at Musselburgh two weeks ago, a race won by The Thin Blue Line, who re-opposes today off four pounds worse. Whilst the winner got a perfect run through when he needed it, Monsieur Kodi came from further back and had to be switched at least twice. There wouldn’t have been much between them otherwise, so Monsieur Kodi looks the best bet of the pair on these revised terms. Next best bet: Monsieur Kodi to win the 17:55 at Ascot
