Teams from the humanitarian organisation Gift Of the Givers were assisting officials in Nelson Mandela Bay after hundreds of residents from an area in Motherwell were forced to leave their homes following heavy weekend rain.
GOG project coordinator, Ali Sablay, said they stepped in on Sunday to provide, among others, hot food, blankets and utility packs for an estimated 300 people being housed at a local church.
Meanwhile, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said while the rain was welcomed, it also led to several power outages across the Metro which teams were addressing.
A Joint Operations Centre was established on Saturday night following the heavy rain which resulted in flooding.
Affected areas included:
* Missionvale;
* KwaZakhele;
* New Brighton;
* Jachvlate;
* 3rd Avenue Dip;
* M4;
* Corner of Uitenhage and Sidon Road;
* Cuyler Bridge in Kariega, among others.
“Our teams are on the ground, assisting affected people and areas. We will assist the affected communities where possible and relocate those that agree. Unfortunately, we cannot evacuate people against their will,” said Safety and Security MMC, Cllr Lawrence Troon.
