The 75-year-old went on foot to try to find help but fell into a gorge.
His family found him on Monday morning.
“Police arrived on site and cut a track through but realised soon that it would take a lot of manpower to stretcher him from the scene,” Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFES) Officer Brad Jeffs said.
Sutherland was carried through the hilly terrain to the rescue helicopter.
He was suffering exposure, mild hypothermia and could hardly talk when he was rescued.
He was transported to Toowoomba Hospital, where he is recovering.
