Small magnitude 3.1 quake hits 21 miles northwest of Wollongong, Australia early afternoon
3.1 quake 18 Jun 2:05 pm (GMT +10)
An earthquake of magnitude 3.1 occurred early afternoon on Sunday, June 18th, 2023, at 2:05 pm local time near Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, as reported by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 1.7 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 3.1 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Douglas Park (pop. 1,300) located 2 miles from the epicenter, Appin (pop. 2,600) 4 miles away, and Wilton (pop. 3,000) 6 miles away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Picton (pop. 4,700) located 7 miles from the epicenter, and Campbelltown (pop. 13,200) 8 miles away. In Liverpool (pop. 27,500, 20 miles away), Wollongong (pop. 292,200, 21 miles away), Parramatta (pop. 26,900, 28 miles away), and Sydney (pop. 4,627,300, 34 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.

Info: The more agencies report about the same quake and post similar data, the more confidence you can have in the data. It takes normally up to a few hours until earthquake parameters are calculated with near-optimum precision.
