The eighth PULiiMA biannual Indigenous Language & Technology Conference will be held on Larrakia Country, Darwin at the Darwin Convention Centre 21-25 August 2023, celebrating an overwhelming response from many International and National presenters looking to share their language and technology stories. A highly anticipated event, PULiiMA has attracted over 450 presenters for this year’s gathering.
PULiiMA is the only language and technology conference gathering developed by Indigenous people, for Indigenous people, attracting specialist organisations and expert individuals throughout Australia and from around the world. Among the esteemed speakers are some of Australia’s most respected and beloved storytellers, enriching the conference with their valuable insights and expertise.
True to the principle “Nothing About Us Without Us”, the Commonwealth Government is working in partnership with the International Decade’s Directions Group and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander language experts from around the country to develop the Australian Action Plan for the International Decade. The Australian Action Plan will be presented at PULiiMA.
For PULiiMA 2023, the Darwin Convention Centre foyer will transform into a village of exhibition booths to further promote a range of effective resources from the language and technology sector.
PULiiMA is hosted by Newcastle-based Aboriginal NGO, Miromaa Aboriginal Language and Technology Centre (MALTC). MALTC’s manager, Daryn McKenny, says:
“In 2023 we have an opportunity to set the baseline for the next decade and make a real, concerted effort to reverse the loss that is still happening, PULiiMA 2023 is that opportunity for us all to come together not just Nationally but globally and recognise, not just the amazing achievements by many, but to also be brave enough to say there is still a lot of hard work ahead from all levels. If so, we will all benefit, because deep down, we need our languages to live through the people and our country. We need to continue to make voice, that is what is at the heart of PULiiMA” said McKenny.
‘PULiiMA’ is an Awabakal word meaning ‘making voice’.
Throughout the PULiiMA 2023 week-long conference, you can attend over 7 Plenaries. The event all up involves 127 presentations, 21 workshops, 3 major events, 27 exhibits and will attract over 800 delegates, all under the one roof. This amounts to over 450 presenters from around the globe within the week.
The 3 major special events are being held to connect our communities. Tuesday evening is an informal IDIL gathering, Wednesday morning is the official IDIL launch with Wednesday evening launching our premiere Gala Event with an alfresco sit-down dinner, entertainment showcasing a surprise leading Australian performer followed by PULiiMA’s unique and immensely popular Australia’s Got Language Talent Contest. 2019 AGL highlights
