Surrey has been issued with three separate flood alerts after some places saw more than 7mm of rainfall in just 24 hours. The county was hit with a second consecutive day of heavy rain on Wednesday (May 10) leading to flood alerts being issued near areas like the Upper River Wey as well as some parts of the River Mole on Thursday (May 11.).
It means flooding is “possible” in major towns across the county including places such as Guildford, Dorking and Godalming. Advice from the Environment Agency includes now using low-lying footpaths and avoiding areas which are prone to flooding, with one area of Chertsey seeing 7.4mm of rain in the past day.
Further advice during a flood alert includes monitoring local weather conditions and preparing a bag full of vital items such as insurance documents and medication in case you need to leave your home. You should also check how to turn off your gas, electricity and water and plan ahead of how you’ll move your family and pets to safety.
