ALBANY — An apparent police standoff Thursday at an apartment building on Hawthorne Avenue was due to an unresponsive, drunken person, police say.
City firefighters responded at about 5:40 p.m. at the back of the apartment for a person who may have fallen while intoxicated, according to Albany police spokesperson Steve Smith. When they arrived, they saw a man run back into the home, heard a popping noise and saw a window break. Police were called in case the man had a gun, Smith said.
Smith said police were outside for several hours, during which time the man was unresponsive to communication. When police entered the apartment he was found unresponsive, likely due to intoxication, Smith said. He was taken to Albany Medical Center for alcohol intoxication and mental health concerns.
No one was injured during the incident, and no weapons were found. Smith said no charges are being filed at this time.
