An early taste of winter has come through Townsville, pulling overnight temperatures down with it. See why it’s been so nippy.
The temperature hit 12.6C in Townsville on Sunday morning and the city is headed for about the same Monday night into Tuesday morning.
In the West, it was even colder, with Richmond hitting 3.4C and 4.4C in Mount Isa.
Wednesday is looking like a minimum of 13 degrees in Townsville as well.
Ayr did actually flirt with single-digits on Sunday morning, recording a minimum of 10.4C.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Steven Hadley said July temperatures had come early and it may be time to – temporarily – grab an extra layer.
“(It’s a) good opportunity to search out those winter blankets,” Mr Hadley said.
He added that temperatures overnight on Sunday were lower than the July average of 13.8. A cold front during the early part of the weekend did not bring much weather but it did drag cold polar air from the south, Mr Hadley said.
However, from Wednesday onwards, Townsville was forecast to be warmer than average.
The wind would turn onshore and the region would lose the cold dry air, Mr Hadley said.
Thursday to Sunday are forecast for a minimum of 17, reaching a maximum of 27.
The lowest recorded temperature in Townsville this month was 10.3 degrees on May 10. The record low is 6.2 degrees.
