Disgraced former MP and twice-convicted paedophile Milton Orkopoulos has been bashed in prison as he waits to learn his fate later this year.
NSW Police on Wednesday said the former Labor minister was treated for head, body and leg injuries at Long Bay Correctional Complex on Tuesday afternoon.
He has been held at the Matraville prison since he was earlier this year found guilty of a string of sexual offences relating to four boys.
Police said they were investigating the circumstances of the incident, which resulted in the former Minister for Aboriginal Affairs being hospitalised.
“Officers from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command are investigating an assault at a Matraville correctional facility, which occurred around 12.30pm on Tuesday 6 June 2023,” NSW Police said.
NSW Corrective Services said that Orkopoulos had been hospitalised following the incident.
“At about 12.15pm on Tuesday, 6 June 2023 correctional officers initiated a medical response after the man was discovered with suspected head injuries. NSW Police were notified,” Corrective Services said in a statement.
“Corrective Services NSW takes great care to determine appropriate security classifications and placements for inmates to maintain the safety and security of our prisons.”
Orkopoulos is scheduled to face sentencing proceedings in August after he was found guilty of 26 charges relating to the sexual abuse of four young boys in the Lake Macquarie region and on NSW’s Mid North Coast from 1993 to 2003.
He was found guilty of 11 counts of intercourse with a child, six counts of indecent assault, two counts of an act of indecency and seven counts of supplying a prohibited drug.
He was also found not guilty of lone counts of supplying a prohibited drug and perverting the course of justice.
Orkopoulos was in 2008 jailed for 13 years and eight months for similar charges.
He was found guilty of 28 charges, including eight counts of homosexual intercourse with a minor and 13 counts of supplying cannabis, relating to three then-teenage boys.
He was released on parole in December 2019 after serving 11-and-a-half years.
However he returned to custody three months later after being arrested for breaching his parole conditions and he was later charged while in prison.
He is due to return to court on August 25.
