A stretch of the Bruce Hwy has claimed its second life inside of three weeks after a man in his twenties, who appeared to be lying on the road, died in hospital after being struck by a car.
Police investigations indicate a 4WD was travelling north on the Bruce Hwy at Midgenoo, 130km south of Cairns, at 1.50am on May 8 when it struck the man who appeared to be lying on the road.
A Cairns truck driver, who requested not to be named, said he was first on the scene at 2am and said the man’s injuries appeared very serious.
“The driver (of the 4WD) was shocked, they had no idea what was going on,” he said.
The injured man was flown to Townsville Hospital in a critical condition.
He made brief positive progress in his recovery when his condition improved to stable on May 24.
But the recovery did not last and he died from his injuries on Saturday, June 10.
Forensic Crash Unit investigations are ongoing.
The driver of the 4WD was not injured in the accident.
It is the second fatality to occur on the Midgenoo stretch of the Bruce Hwy inside a month after a male cyclist was killed on that stretch of road on May 20.
The man was struck by a Toyota RAV4 which was being driven by a 17-year-old person, who did not sustain any injuries.
The cyclist was declared dead at the scene.
