CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — PC MLA Darlene Compton has been elected as the new Speaker for P.E.I.’s legislative assembly.
Compton, the MLA for Belfast – Murray River, was elected to the role during the start of the spring session of the P.E.I. legislature May 12.
She is the sixth woman to hold the title and the 69th Speaker overall in the province’s history.
“Compton has a strong rapport with all members of the house, is a strong supporter of good governance and respects the role of the legislative branch of government,” Premier Dennis King said in a statement.

King also announced new leadership appointments to the government caucus.
Matthew MacKay, MLA for Kensington – Malpeque, will serve as government house leader, while Zack Bell, MLA for Charlottetown – Winsloe, will take on dual roles as government whip and caucus chair.
“These individuals have a tremendous amount of leadership experience both as MLAs and as individuals and I am excited to have them guide our caucus in the months and years to come,” said King.
Additionally, Sidney MacEwen, MLA for Morell – Donagh, will serve as deputy Speaker.
