PARKERSBURG — The citywide paving project is set to begin Tuesday.
Approximately 9,000 tons of asphalt will be applied to 7.15 miles of municipal streets, according to a release from city Engineer Adam Stout.
That represents decreases of 10% on tonnage and 6% on distance, even though the cost rose 16% to $1,801,510.
“Inflation is real,” Mayor Tom Joyce said. “The price is increased, so we’re getting less tonnage, fewer linear feet, for roughly the same amount of money.”
Joyce said he’s committed to continuing to do the most work the city can to improve its streets, but that means appropriating more money in the future.
“It’s a priority; it’s a necessity; but it’s also very costly,” he said.
To compile the list, Stout and an engineering technician started by consulting in-house records of road maintenance and conditions, but they didn’t stay at their desks.
“We drive all city streets and compare it to our list and evaluate them on what needs done, what makes sense as far as connectivity of previous paved roads,” Stout said. “It’s a long, drawn-out process.”
The contractor on the project is Kelly Paving. Houses on the roads to be resurfaced will be notified with a door hanger listing the dates the work is to be done. Vehicles left on the road will be towed, the release said.
Motorists are asked to be mindful of traffic pattern changes and workers.
