Bundaberg council is seeking public feedback for the Bargara Nielson Park development, including enhanced picnic shelters and improvements to the Bundaberg Surf Life Saving Club.
A concept design document and survey were released on the council website on Friday, June 16, with the survey scheduled to close at midnight on Sunday, July 16.
Community consultation from the previous round of public feedback in January 2023 identified the need to install more BBQs and picnic tables with shelters to cater for the increased amount of people using the park on weekends and public holidays.
The concept design plan includes locations for new and refurbished shelters throughout the park and a new car park with more than 40 spaces straddling Fred Courtice Ave near the Bundaberg Surf Life Saving Club.

The master plan was developed by Cairns-based urban design firm LA3 to guide the installation of BBQs, picnic tables and further enhancements to the park over the coming years.
The plan includes locations for new and refurbished shelters throughout the park, including large group shelters providing shade for four picnic tables.

Improved seating and dining areas are proposed for the Bundaberg Surf Life Saving Club, with a new car park with more than 40 spaces straddling Fred Courtice Ave near the Club.
New bicycle pathways and improved pedestrian thoroughfares are also included.
The proposed improvements are derived from the previous round of community consultations in January 2023 in which the public were asked what aspects of the park needed to be improved.
Feedback included outdated and worn fencing, picnic shelters and playground equipment, limited car parking with no line marking, speed bumps or pedestrian crossings on the roads throughout the park, and insufficient lighting with narrow footpaths.

Positive feedback included spacious parklands including the dog park zone, well-located Bundaberg Surf life Saving Club and views of the ocean from the Surf Riders Picnic Area and parklands in the south of the park.

The Nielson Park redevelopment is part of council’s Parks & Open Space Strategy 2019 – 2026.
According to council documents, the strategy aims to ensure that open space is a key element of future planning and development in the Bundaberg region.
