At least every other week during the spring season, we’ll talk some Oregon high school baseball. This is the place!
North Eugene junior received Caiden Gould has been a bright light all season behind the dish for the Highlanders
Unbeatens
There is only one unbeaten team in the state of Oregon now after defending 2A/1A champion Kennedy (26-0) dominated previously-unbeaten St. Paul in a three-game series last week. The Trojans started with a 10-0 win in Game 1, then tacked on 12-4 and 8-6 victories.
St. Paul, which won 18 in a row to start the season, now has lost four straight after Tuesday’s 13-3 loss to 3A power Banks.
After Kennedy, here are the next best teams in Oregon, by record:
6A – Sherwood, 23-3
5A – Thurston, 22-3
4A – Scappoose, 22-2; Gladstone 21-3; Marist Catholic, 20-3
3A – Banks, 23-2; Cascade Christian, 23-3
2A/1A – Blanchet Catholic, 25-2; Umpqua Valley Christian, 25-3
Riverhawks!
The most surprising team in Oregon baseball, by far, is The Dalles. Playing in 5A last season, the Riverhawks went 4-20 and just 2-17 in league play.
The team moved down a classification and, in coach Pat Clark’s first year as head coach, eclipsed its 2022 win total by the end of March. The Dalles finished the regular season 10-5 in league, good for second place; and 16-9 overall.
Clark said a combination of factors spurred the turnaround.
“Undoubtedly the move down to 4A was beneficial to us and is a factor,” he said. “But we had a very successful summer and re-established some belief in themselves that was lost with our guys. I put a major emphasis when I took over on finding a love for the game again. The talent was there last year…the culture and ‘want to’ wasn’t.”
Showdown in the TRL
West Linn has clinched first place in the 6A Three Rivers League after taking two of three from Lakeridge last week. The Lions absorbed a 10-0 loss in the first game, as Paul Wilson spun a gem for the Pacers; then came back with supreme performances from junior Gabe Howard and senior Drake Gabel. The hurlers shut out Lakeridge, 1-0 and 3-0, respectively.
“They both have been lights out all year,” said West Linn coach Joe Monahan.
Junior catcher Ryan VandenBrink hit a three-run home run in Game 2 of the series, his sixth on the year.

West Linn swept Oregon City this week to clinch first, ahead of Lakeridge and Lake Oswego, in the tough TRL.

News and notes…
In a league game versus Eagle Point early in April, North Eugene junior catcher Caiden Gould had four baserunners attempt to steal on him. He threw each one out!

After playing only a junior varsity schedule In 2021 and winning just six games in 2022, look for 13-11 Country Christian / North Clackamas Christian to make the 2A/1A playoffs for the first time since 2015. The Cougars, starting five freshmen and two sophomores among their core nine, finished above .500 in Special District 2, which includes Kennedy and St. Paul…

Cascade Christian swept South Umpqua in a doubleheader on Monday to complete an undefeated league season and back-to-back Far West league championships. The Challengers were down three runs going into the final innings against a South Umpqua team that had been No. 1 in the OSAA’s 3A computerized ranking and ended up walking it off on a wild pitch.
In Game 2, after a 45-minute lightning delay, the Cascade Christian put seven runs on the board in the final three innings to complete the sweep, 9-3, and clinch the league title…
