A Hancock man is dead after his vehicle left the interstate in Hampden on Saturday.
Where Was the Crash?
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesperson Shannon Moss says State Troopers responded to the crash near mile marker 176 at approximately 4:39 Saturday afternoon. There, they found a vehicle in the median.
Have Police Identified the Deceased?
Thomas Merchant, 63, of Hancock was found deceased, inside the vehicle.
How Did It Happen?
Troopers conducted an investigation at the scene and believe that Merchant crashed his Acura sedan into the median guardrails, as he was traveling south on I-95 in Hampden, near mile marker 176. The vehicle then continued to travel another 300 feet before coming to a stop.
Officials say weather and speed were factors in this crash. Saturday saw rain all day, making roadways slick. Maine State Police were assisted at the scene by fire departments from Hampden and Hermon.
The crash remains under investigation.
