NSW Police were desperately trying to track down Nathan Vikatos after concerns were raised about domestic violence, in the hours before he allegedly killed a three-year-old boy in a Sydney unit.
Emergency services rushed to Riverwood after a female relative found the toddler stabbed to death about 4pm on Wednesday.
Vikatos, 45, was seriously injured with what police suspect were self-inflicted knife wounds in the unit on Washington Avenue.
Paramedics intubated him at the scene and transferred him to hospital clinging to life. He is now in a stable condition after emergency surgery.
Police expect to charge him over the stabbing in the coming days.
The Herald can reveal police had been called to find Vikatos, earlier on Wednesday, over alleged domestic violence.
It’s understood that Vikatos had only recently arrived in Riverwood and was staying in the unit of an older relative. The building is reserved housing for over-50s, locals say.
Vikatos usually lives at Medlow Bath in the Blue Mountains, and neighbours say he spends much of his time in Sydney. The house is cordoned off with police tape.
