Following the heavy rains that caused flooding in parts of Nelson Mandela Bay, the Metro activated the Joint Operating Centre on Saturday night, 13 May.
Homes have been flooded while some roads have had to be closed as a safety precautionary measure.
Affected areas include:
- Missionvale;
- KwaZakhele;
- New Brighton;
- Jachvlate;
- 3rd Avenue Dip;
- M4;
- Corner of Uitenhage and Sidon Road;
- Cuyler Bridge in Kariega, among others.
The Metro remains on high alert and ready to evacuate people to places of safety. However, some flood victims have refused to be relocated, citing fears of losing their belongings when they leave their homes.
Safety and Security MMC, Lawrence Troon said the Municipality would continue to monitor the situation.
“We welcome the downpours because we are in desperate need of the rain as we are in the tight grip of the devastating drought.
“Our teams are on the ground, assisting affected people and areas. We will assist the affected communities where possible and relocate those that agree. Unfortunately, we cannot evacuate people against their will,” he said.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has released the latest rainfall figures this morning.

According to Garth Sampson from SAWS, more rain is expected on Thursday.
