A man who was involved in a serious nightclub assault has been sentenced after he was seen acting suspiciously in Geelong’s north, despite being banned from the region.
Apai Ali, a 24-year-old Point Cook man, on Thursday pleaded guilty in the Geelong Magistrates Court to breaching a community corrections order.
In March last year Ali pleaded guilty to charges of recklessly causing injury for assaulting a man at Bloom nightclub which left the victim with a broken nose, a fractured cheekbone and nerve damage to his lips and cheek.
As a result of those charges, he was sentenced to a 10 month term of imprisonment and a community corrections order that prohibited him from stepping into Greater Geelong.
But police said on April 6 this year, Ali was seen in Norlane checking the door handles of a vehicle about 11.30pm, and a member of the public alerted police.
When police located Ali he ran from the scene for a short distance before he was eventually captured and placed under arrest.
The court was told at the time of his arrest he was on two counts of bail and was also on a community corrections order.
Magistrate Peter Mellas said Ali was clearly not capable of complying with a community corrections order.
“A lot of things in your life have affected how you make decisions and how you live,” Mr Mellas said.
“If you don’t start to do some work on things which work for you, the risk is you will be back in this situation time and time again.
“You are building up quite the history. You are building up a portfolio of almost 44-pages of prior matters,” Mr Mellas said.
Ali was sentenced to 30 days’ jail in relation to the breach of the corrections order.
