Like many who have visited the rugged coastline of Italy, Summa McCrackan fell in love with the Amalfi Coast and wanted to share her passion for this country back home in South Australia.
“We were due to go back, and COVID hit, so we couldn’t. So we were like, right, what can we do to bring Amalfi to us,” explains Summa “And I came up with the idea to make Limoncello. From there, I started delving into how to make it traditionally.”
When it comes to capturing the essence of an Italian summer, few drinks can transport you to the Amalfi Coast quite like Limoncello and Summa wanted to create a product that followed a traditional recipe and used local, 100% natural ingredients.
Beyond the taste of Limon, it was also important to Summa that it be a sustainable product. By sourcing lemons from local producers in the Adelaide Hills and using recycled packaging Summa has reduced the carbon footprint of her product. Added to that, any lemons that cannot be used in her recipe are shared with neighbouring restaurants, ensuring nothing goes to waste.
And while a Limoncello recipe may call for just a handful of ingredients, like many of Italy’s most important culinary traditions, the simplicity of the recipe can be deceiving.
“It’s simple, but it’s very tricky to get the percentages and the ABV and everything absolutely perfectly balanced with the sugar syrup and whatnot. So, there’s a bit of an art to it.”
The result is a flavourful, zesty liqueur that transports you to the sun-soaked Amalfi Coast.
While the inspiration for Limon is steeped in history, the branding feels fresh. A generous label with modern typography is topped with a cork stopper and a stripped seal reminiscent of the umbrellas that line Italian beaches.
“I wanted something that looked beautiful and tasted beautiful that you could display on a wine cabinet,” says Summa.
And although Limon is less than a year old, it’s already getting attention, with Jules Sebastian featuring it in her Cocktail Hour on Instagram.
“She was awesome, I know she’s an Adelaide girl, and she does the cocktail hour,” says Summa “I just reached out and said, I’ve just launched this new SA made limoncello, and she was kind enough to do a cocktail hour with it. That was amazing, she’s such a legend and always happy to help small businesses.”
Local restaurants and bars have been getting on board too with it featuring on the shelves of Dolly, Bar Lune, Penfolds, Star of Greece, and Down the Rabbit Hole to name a few.
In creating a product that feels authentic to its roots but also modern Summa has created a bottle that looks stylish on a restaurant shelf or on display in someone’s home.
With its sleek design and attention to detail, Limon captures the spirit of an Italian summer with every sip.
