NEW GLASGOW – Mothers, daughters, and furry friends came together to celebrate moms May 14 as part of the Miss Miles Mother’s Day 5k.
Many familiar faces were at the event, including the town’s mayor.
“It’s a beautiful day, there is a great turnout, lots of very happy people,” said Nancy Dicks.
“This event is a good start to the season. There are more events to come, everything starts happening and more people are out and about,” she added. “It’s great to see the support that people have with events like this. The ladies being supported by their family and friends.”
One of those families was that of longtime politician Peter MacKay.
“It’s a very inspirational day for anybody who is a mother and is participating. It is a tribute to mothers in general. It’s a beautiful day to have my wife and daughter running. She’s carrying my mother’s name, so it’s a real special day for us,” MacKay said.
The YMCA was gifted the Johnny Miles Running Events in 2021. Previously, Terry Curley ran them with his wife, but now they are mentoring the YMCA and recreation director Marla Sim on the events.
This is Sim’s second year hosting the Miss Miles Mother’s Day 5k.
“There’s no timing, so this event is more laid back,” Sim said.
The next event taking place is the Johnny Miles Running Event Weekend, which takes place on June 18. The Run for the Lobster event happens in Pictou on July 9, in conjunction with the Pictou Lobster Carnival.
“We have the capacity to serve so many more people in that event and it marries so nicely with what else is going on that day,” Sim said about the Run for the Lobster event.
