New Comics This Week From Marvel: May 17, 2023

Marvel’s The Avengers relaunch gives the team a revamped roster in the new comics this week.

Writer Jason Aaron’s run on The Avengers ended with Marvel’s big Avengers Assemble event, which wrapped with the bookend issue Avengers Assemble: Omega #1 in April 2023. The team now led by Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers, The Avengers is going back to Issue #1 with writer Jed MacKay and artist Carlos Villa serving as the series’ main creative team. The two are reuniting after their time working on Black Cat together, and MacKay has written titles like Moon Knight, Strange and more since then. They are starting out their Avengers run with a roster also featuring Captain America/Sam Wilson, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Thor, Iron Man and Black Panther.

Shifting away from the Avengers to Marvel’s first family, the Fantastic Four are celebrating their 700th issue on Wednesday — but not without the team’s greatest villain. Written by Ryan North and drawn by Iban Coello, Doctor Doom makes his first appearance in their run within the pages of Fantastic Four #7. Not only will the milestone issue see Doom traverse time and space to undo the heroes’ greatest mistake from Fantastic Four #4, but it will also give the team a new home other than the Baxter Building.

Then, Hulk Annual #1 is out to bridge the gap between Marvel’s now-finished Hulk title and upcoming The Incredible Hulk series launching in June 2023. The Incredible Hulk will be written by Action Comics scribe Phillip Kennedy Johnson and recent Thor artist Nic Klein. Writer David Pepose and artist Caio Majado are behind the annual issue’s main story, but it will also feature an exclusive preview of what’s to come for the Green Goliath from Johnson and Klein.
