Planet Ark’s National Tree Day started in 1996 and has grown into Australia’s largest community tree planting and nature care event. It’s a call to action for all Australians to get their hands dirty and help to a create greener, cooler local environment for future generations to enjoy. Since 1996, 26 million trees have been planted by 5 million volunteers over 10 million hours of donated time.
To celebrate this year’s National Tree Day, Kempsey Shire Council is giving away one native tree or shrub per person, as well as a promo pack containing information on caring for natives. The native trees and shrubs are suitable for residential blocks and are not poisonous for people or pets. The event is held in conjunction with Planet Ark and Macleay Landcare. There will be limited vegetable seedlings available as well for residents.
