Earlier this week quarterback prospect Bryce Clavon from Marietta (GA) Kell H.S. picked up an offer from the Hoosiers. The 5-foot-11, 182-pound signal-caller spoke with Peegs.com about his recruiting and about his interest in the IU program.
Clavon said the Indiana staff is impressed with the plays he can make in the pocket with his arm and outside the pocket with his legs.
“I’ve been talking to Coach Walt Bell,” he said. “He said that he likes that I can do everything on the field. I can make all the throws, I can make plays on the run, and I can make plays with my feet. He likes what I can do as a playmaker and as a quarterback.”
The three-star recruit is still learning about the Hoosiers, but he likes what he has heard so far from a current member of the program.
“When they offered me on the phone it was my first time talking to the coaches,” Clavon said when asked what he knows about Indiana. “I don’t know much about them, but I know a receiver that foes there, Kamryn Perry. I’ve talked to him a little bit about Indiana and he told me that he loves it there.”
Clavon is also an outstanding baseball prospect and he is looking for a school that will allow him to play both sports in college.
“I’m looking for a school where I have a good relationship with the coaches, and somewhere that will allow me to play two sports and play at a high level and just do what I’ve been dreaming about my whole life,” he said. “I have an offer from Indiana for baseball as well. I have talked about it with Coach Bell and the (Indiana) baseball coaches and they are all onboard with it.”
The Georgia native admitted that if he gets drafted by a MLB team and they offer him enough money it could make him think twice about playing in college.
“Sometime too much money is just too much to turn down,” Clavon said. “It is something I will talk with my family about before any decisions get made.”
Clavon is a shortstop in baseball and he said the skills needed to play that position have helped him as a quarterback in football.
“As a shortstop all the different arm angles I have to throw with and all the things I have to do with my feet carry over to football,” he said. “When you watch my film you will see a lot of crossbody throws and a lot of misdirection throws, which is something I do when I’m playing shortstop.”
This past fall Clavon completed 68 percent of his passes as he threw for 2,668 yards with 24 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He also carried the ball 91 times for 789 yards and 15 touchdowns. The talented prospect said he felt more comfortable as a leader on the field and with his role in the offense.
“I felt like I was a better leader this past year,” Clavon said. “I had more control in the offense and that allowed me to tell the coach what I was seeing on the field and actually doing it. I felt like I got better as an all-around quarterback and as a pocket passer. I felt like every dynamic in the game I got better at.”
Clavon currently has offers from Indiana, Appalachian State, James Madison, Troy, UMass, UNLV, Western Kentucky, Western Michigan, Austin Peay, Campbell, Dartmouth, Eastern Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee Tech. He said landing his first power five football offer from IU is meaningful.
“It’s a blessing from God,” he said about the Indiana offer. “I was kind of wondering why the football interest wasn’t there and it was always the baseball. This offer is big for me.”
At some point the two-sport star plans on making a trip up to Bloomington to get a closer look at the Hoosiers.
“I have talked to Coach Bell about making an official visit there,” Clavon said. “I just want to have that home feeling where I’m comfortable with everybody. I want to spend time with the coaches and get a feel for the camaraderie on the team and see how I would fit in.”
When it comes to making his college decision the athletic signal-caller said he is no hurry to pick a school.
“There’s no timetable for making a decision,” Clavon said. “As soon as I’m comfortable enough with the coaching staff, and as soon as I can get on a visit and get a feel for everything.”
According to the 247Sports composite rankings Clavon is ranked the 66th best quarterback in the country and the number 109 prospect in the state of Georgia.
