Good morning! The other day, my family and I had an extraordinary lobster roll experience at Archie’s Lobster in Bass Harbor, Maine. We sat on the dock, enjoying the delicious roll while gulls soared above us on a gentle southwest breeze. Not only was the lobster roll exceptional, but the steamed clams were also incredibly tasty. However, it was the crab roll that left a lasting impression on me. Its sweet and salty flavors, lightly dressed and served on a warm, buttered bun, have been haunting my dreams ever since. It has inspired me to venture into the kitchen this weekend and recreate that incredible taste.
Although crab meat can be a bit pricey, as Gabrielle Hamilton mentioned in The New York Times Magazine, there are moments when we should allow ourselves to be a little reckless at the fishmonger. “For me, a pound of fresh peekytoe crab meat is the way to go,” she wrote. I wholeheartedly agree and I’m willing to scrimp and save for it. It’s going to be my Father’s Day plan, right there.
However, if I can’t find crab, I’m considering making a mouthwatering reverse-seared steak with roasted duck fat potatoes, steamed asparagus, and an apple pie for dessert. Another option that sounds just as enticing is buttermilk fried chicken with greens, mashed potatoes, and creamy gravy.
I’m also excited to try Genevieve Ko’s new recipe for trail mix. It’s a creative technique where raw nuts and seeds are toasted with vinegar instead of oil, giving them a tangy flavor that pairs perfectly with pinches of salt and sugar. This trail mix will provide sustenance for a long walk and talk on Sunday.
If I can fit it into my weekend plan, I would love to make a meatball sub, a celery Victor salad, and some spiced Irish oatmeal. Dad deserves to have whatever he wants on Sunday, right?
If you’re looking for more recipe inspiration, there are thousands available on New York Times Cooking. A subscription is required to access them, as it supports their work and allows it to continue. I highly recommend getting a subscription if you don’t already have one. It’s well worth it!

Please understand that I receive a high volume of letters, so I may not be able to respond to every one individually, but I do read them all.
Now, let’s switch gears and talk about something unrelated to food. Recently, I delved back into the work of Tana French, specifically her captivating 2010 novel “Faithful Place.” It’s part of her Dublin Murder Squad series and focuses on a supporting character taking center stage. I found it to be a crackling good read.
In a similar vein, I’ve started exploring Archer Mayor’s police procedurals about Lt. Joe Gunther of the Brattleboro, Vt., police department. They offer a thrilling escape into the world of crime-solving.
If you’re looking for a good read, I highly recommend “Lady Vols Country” by Jessica Wilkerson in the Oxford American. It’s a captivating piece about growing up in Tennessee in the 1990s.
Finally, I encourage you to listen to Big Thief’s “Shark Smile” this weekend. Turn up the volume and let the music take you away. I hope to connect with you again on Sunday.
