CHAMPION — The Marquette boys team and Rachel Niskanen of Negaunee were winners at the Range Bank Invitational high school golf tournament held at Wawonowin Country Club on Monday.
The Redmen totaled 329 strokes among their four lowest shooters to beat out the Houghton boys by five.
Niskanen, meanwhile, dominated the girls individual meet by shooting nine-hole rounds of 39 and 40 for an 18-hole score of 79, earning medalist honors as she was 16 strokes better than runner-up Bryonna Sanders of Kingsford.
Here are details from each meet:
MSHS boys consistent
All four of Marquette’s scorers finished in the top 10, though one player had to take 11th place based on a tiebreaker.
The Redmen’s Jack Pond finished fifth individually with 40-39–79, while teammates Kyle Moyer and Boden Moore each totaled 83 and Pavel McCutcheon came in with 84.
Moyer finished sixth and Moore ninth based on tiebreakers, while McCutcheon was 11th.
Even MSHS’ fifth scorer, Easton Aho, turned in a solid round of 90 and was 25th.
Runner-up Houghton was not only just five strokes back at 334, but the Gremlins’ Marino Pisani was boys medalist with 35-38–73.
He beat out Norway’s Carson Chartier by a single stroke as the Knights golfer had 39-35–74. And third-place Cage Osterman of L’Anse-Baraga was just one more stroke behind with 38-37–75.
The rest of the top 10 included Kingsford’s Troy Watt in fourth with 78, Negaunee’s Corbin Erva in seventh with 41-42–83, Westwood’s Tanner Annala eighth with 43-40–83 and Calumet’s Ben Anderson 10th with 84.
Negaunee’s Holden Meyer was in a group of six golfers just missing the top 10 as he tied for 12th with 43-43–86.
L’Anse-Baraga’s No. 2 finisher was Keller Koskinen with 88, while teammate Zak Kissel was right behind with 89.
Negaunee’s other scorers were Cole Karki with 92 and Dane Saari with 93, while Westwood also got 96 from Chase Korpi and Gwinn was paced by Dylan Derwin with 112.
Team-wise, Calumet was third with 344, while Kingsford came in fourth with 345, followed by L’Anse-Baraga with 352, Negaunee 354, Norway 378, Gladstone 395, Westwood 407, West Iron County 464 and Gwinn 525.
Niskanen paces Miners
Niskanen almost propelled Negaunee to the team win, too, as the Miners scored 424 to finish just two strokes behind Kingsford’s 422.
Negaunee had two other top-10 finishers with Josie Smith sixth with 49-53–102 and Kennidy Glasheen ninth with 64-55–119.
Sanders shot 95 to finish second, with Calumet’s Gracie Coppo third with 96, Kingsford’s Grace Maki fourth with 98, Calumet’s Lily Kernanen fifth with 99, Kingsford’s Maddy Zueske seventh with 107, WIC’s Kya Dallavalle eighth with 109 and WIC’s Aubrey Bice 10th with 120.
The Miners’ Kina Salmela just missed the top 10, finishing 12th with 124, while teammate Mialie Arbelius posted 157.
Westwood was paced by Ally Grokowski finishing 15th with 127, while the Patriots’ Abby Williams shot 140, Clara Kruger 146 and Kaya Etelamaki 152.
There was a big drop after Kingsford and Negaunee team-wise as Calumet was third with 472, 48 behind the Miners, while WIC was fourth with 495, followed by Houghton with 551 and Westwood 565.
