The Perseverance Street Youth Theatre will present the visually stunning A Monster Calls next week.

For the past 10 weeks, the Perseverance Street Youth Theatre have been working on their physical theatre production of A Monster Calls, inspired by the award-winning novel by Patrick Ness and Siobhan Dowd.
The performance explores the life of thirteen-year-old Connor, as he faces a major life challenge.
A Monster in the form of an ancient Yew Tree, comes walking to guide him through this experience.
The performance runs for 70 minutes and includes complex movement work as the cast tell four tales.
Having toured through the UK and the USA this play features a cast of 15-20 actors all working as an ensemble to create the imaginary world of Connor.
The play explores themes of love, loss and courage.
The Gympie cast of range in age from 12 – 19 years and features students, recent graduates and professional actors.
“As a professional theatre company, our youth theatre approach is unique in that the cast also learn by performing with professional actors, key members of the Perseverance Street ensemble,” said Play director and CEO of Perseverance Street Theatre Company, Sharon Hogan.
Ms Hogan and fellow professional theatre director Sarah Harvey have been hard at work directing and devising the production, using their experienced in ensemble work, voice and movement, to tell this poetic and challenging work and also build the acting skills of the whole cast.
“We have 20 young people, from all pockets of Gympie, performing and devising in this visually stunning production,” Ms Sarah Harvey, director and vocal coach, said.
“For most of them, this is their first main stage performance ever.
“The ensemble is a tight-knit group of young performers that are ready to put in their all.”
Lead actor, Riley Hotham (16) is really enjoying the whole experience.
“The rehearsal process has been so fun and doing physical theatre has allowed the whole cast to become really close – now we’re all like one big family”, he said.
The show will run from next Tuesday, 20 June to Sunday 25 June and showings will be held the brand-new rehearsal studio at 4/24 Barter Street.
The show deals with the themes of loss, grief and resilience and is suitable for audiences aged 12 and older.
